RLL UP Drip 2 - Willing & Able

Understanding People™

One is Not Enough

There are certain jobs that can't be done with a hammer!

One size doesn't fit all, and one tool doesn't fix all.

With leadership... one approach and style won't work either.

The Willing & Able Assessment

Situational leadership models can be complex and confusing. We've boiled down this important concept into a simple four box model.

Step One: Assess employee for Willingness and Ability
Step Two: Identify in which box they fall.
Step Three: Review the leadership approach necessary.

Telling

Be more directive and explicit about what, when, and how to do something. Instruct and explain, but keep performance expectations clear.

Selling

Use persuasion and encouragement to motivate the employee to get the job done. If resistant, explain rationale and set expectations. If a lack of confidence, reassure.

Assisting

Stay more involved so the employee can tap into our knowledge and experience when needed. Demonstrate, participate, teach and encourage.

Empowering

Assign tasks, projects, and duties with little direction. Provide broad guidelines, but let them run with it on their own.

Remember...

A person's readiness can vary from assignment to assignment. Understanding readiness for each major job duty or project will ensure the employee gets the right amount of your time, attention, and communication.
